Long Ashton Course Hole-by-hole
Hole 01
A long par 4 for men and par 5 for ladies into the prevailing wind. Water, not visible from the tee, will catch an errant tee shot to the left, whilst woodland awaits on the right.
“Long uphill dog-leg right, a good drive is important but the lake beyond the gorse bushes comes into play when the wind is helping. The green slopes away from a ridge across the middle to both the back and the front so club selection is important."

Hole 01
Long Ashton opens with a straightforward hole which has no special difficulties. A straight drive between two mounds and a bold approach to the green, which is well banked at the back, should do the trick.
“Big hitters might reach the green, but beware of OOB and other trouble on the right (which is true for the next twelve hole too). It may be best to concentrate on staying straight (generally a good idea at Long Ashton) and leave a full shot into the green.”

Hole 02
This is the shortest hole on the course, and is played over a road. A high dropping shot is required to the shelf-like green which is backed by rugged rocks.
“Our shortest par 3, but well guarded by bunkers and mounds and the wind can be difficult to judge from the tee, so choose your club carefully.”

Hole 03
A blind tee shot with trouble on the right, as the fairway falls away dramatically to heavy rough. The elevated green offers fine views of the city of Bristol and surrounding countryside.
Note the Light button instructions in operation on this hole. Remember to push the button once you pass the posts!
“Past the marker post, the fairway slopes left to right, so slightly left of the post may be best, but not too long on that line or you're in the trees. Enjoy the view when you get up to the marker post."

Hole 04
You need to keep your drive straight and on the fairway on this hole! Rough and gorse provide trouble along the right and on the left is a pond to catch a hooked drive. The shot over the brow needs to be on the left as the ground falls to the right.
“One of the more demanding drives but a good hit (avoiding the gorse on the right!) can set up a birdie chance. Beware the pond and try to leave an uphill putt, especially in summer."

Hole 05
The fifth having been extended a few years ago, is now a challenging par 5. The small oak on the left of the fairway is a favourite line for the tee shot. Steeply sloping terrain to the right of the fairway has ruined many a card - beware the sliced second shot!
“A tough par 5 and trying to straighten out the double dog-leg is risky. The fairway gets tighter as you get longer and the green is only reachable in two by the biggest hitters if the wind is behind. Deep trouble on the right. Bogey is not a bad score here."

Hole 06
An elevated tee, with a fine view towards the green. Again, a sliced shot is punished by heavy rough. The bank on the right of the green tends to hold a wayward approach, whereas undergrowth to the left should definitely be avoided!
“The elevated tee makes the drive inviting, but again the fairway gets progressively tighter. Try to avoid a downhill putt on one of the trickiest greens on the course."

Hole 07
A long par 4 for men and par 5 for ladies into the prevailing wind. Water, not visible from the tee, will catch an errant tee shot to the left, whilst woodland awaits on the right.
“Long uphill dog-leg right, a good drive is important but the lake beyond the gorse bushes comes into play when the wind is helping. The green slopes away from a ridge across the middle to both the back and the front so club selection is important."

Hole 08
A short par 4, with a green that is reachable with a faded tee shot. Out of Bounds will punish a sliced tee shot or a thinned approach.
“Risk and reward! It's definitely reachable if the wind is helping, as the ground can take the ball into the green, but there is OOB right and a safe tee shot will leave only a short iron into a receptive green. Will you go for it?"
Kindly sponsored by IntoHeat
Hole 09
The green is well protected by 5 bunkers, but otherwise this is a straightforward hole. People often prefer to play short, leaving an uphill putt.
“An uphill shot (more so than it looks) to a well protected and deceptively undulating green. Again, try to avoid the downhill putt.”

Hole 10
The tee-shot crosses the road and requires a carry of approximately 130 yards, followed by an accurate long iron shot into the prevailing wind to the well-bunkered green.
“A straight shot needed into the prevailing wind, over the road to a flat fairway and then a long iron or fairway wood uphill slightly to a well guarded green.”

Hole 11
As the tee for this hole is near to the Club House, it presents a very good alternative starting point when necessary. It is slightly elevated and recessed close to a small coppice and calls for a long carry of approximately 200 yards to clear a gully. Club selection for the second shot is made more difficult by the fact that the green has no background, and is guarded by bunkers on the right.
“An inviting short par 4, but beware the practice putting green (especially from the white tee) and the OOB beyond, stay left off the tee and take care on the green, which has some subtle borrows.”
Kindly sponsored by Neat Kitchens
Hole 12
Made longer by the prevailing wind, this par 4 presents no other hidden problems.
“Another long par 4, uphill and into the wind, with OOB to the right and gorse to the left and a well protected green, otherwise a straightforward hole!”

Hole 13
A short par 3 redesigned in 2009 to protect our neighbours. This hole is expected to play longer than the yardage might suggest and the green is one of the longest, so it could play even longer.
“Take care when selecting your club as the pin position will have a big effect on this long green.”
Kindly sponsored by Bray & Slaughter Ltd
Hole 14
A drawn tee shot over the nearest bunker will leave the ball running down towards the green.
“Lots of room left (unless you're very long, in which case you may choose to flirt with the bunker) and no OOB on the right (just trees). Beware of going over the green as the chip back is tricky, the green slopes less to the front than most people think, but it does go right."

Hole 15
Stroke index 1, made more difficult by the prevailing wind, especially from the white tee, which adds considerably to the yardage.
“Stroke index 1, and rightly so. Chris Wood may get up in two but for most of us (especially the men) a bogey is not a bad score, any day. The green may be the flattest on the course.”

Hole 16
A fade off the tee can bring the green into range on this lovely par 4. The two-tiered green is never the same!
“A birdie chance if downwind, but stay left off the tee as as the trees on the right swallow golf balls. A difficult green to hold as everything goes right and a running shot can just keep running, leaving a very hard chip back. Lots of shape in the green, good luck!”
Kindly sponsored by Local Pages
Hole 17
Apparently straightforward, this par 3 is made harder by the fact that the bunkers are invisible from most tee positions. It can also be a long hit on a windy day.
“Another difficult green to hold, as the entry is very narrow. More uphill than it looks and anything right of the bunkers leaves an almost impossible shot. You should have checked the pin position as you walked down the 16th - again, it's best to stay below the hole.”
Sponsored by Marstons Brewery
Hole 18
The round is completed with a long par 5. There are no special difficulties if one plays straight for the green. A wood which runs along the right of the fairway will cause disaster to any cut shot. Players tend to underclub the approach due to the hollow in front of the green.
“Hit your best drive, avoiding the deep rough and OOB to the right and the green may be reachable in two, because a ball landed short will run on, though the ground between the bunkers will throw the ball to the right. The green generally goes right, too, though a couple of hollows may provide a final challenge.”
